Global Lighting Community Prepares to Chase the Dark

The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) is preparing for the eleventh edition of its highly anticipated Chase the Dark event during the Vernal Equinox on 20 March 2024.

This unique, 24-hour celebration follows the rising sun as it "chases" the darkness westward from one side of the International Date Line to the other. Lighting designers, students, and enthusiasts worldwide join the activity individually or in localized gatherings around a central theme.

This year's Chase the Dark focuses on Upcycling, which refers to using and reusing "found materials" for a new and possibly even better purpose. Individuals and teams worldwide will make tealight luminaires from used or discarded items around us.

IALD President Andrea Hartranft is delighted to see the event's return, particularly with the upcycling theme.

"The theme highlights the role of lighting design in addressing the critical issues of sustainability and environmental responsibility," Hartranft said. "Participants are encouraged to create lighting experiences that illuminate spaces beautifully and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future."

IALD Regions and Chapters will coordinate social gatherings in numerous cities to join Chase the Dark, and individuals can participate from anywhere in the world. Throughout 20 March, the resulting upcycled luminaires can be shared on social media using the hashtag #IALDChaseDark.

Event Highlights:
  • Global reach. By following #IALDChaseDark on social media, you can witness the diverse perspectives and talents of lighting professionals from different regions as the event travels across time zones.
  • Community building. Connect and collaborate with fellow lighting enthusiasts online and in person, and celebrate the power of light.
  • Educational opportunities. A number of the local events will also feature talks and discussions led by renowned lighting experts.
  • Sustainable focus. Explore innovative approaches to lighting design that minimize environmental impact.

Join the Chase! Chase the Dark 2024: Upcycling promises to be an inspiring and impactful event, shedding light on the transformative power of lighting design. Take advantage of this opportunity to be part of a global movement and contribute to a brighter future!
