IALD Education Trust

SCHOOLS

Learn2Light offers an overview of schools that offer diverse educational programs in design, engineering and science with focus in architectural lighting design.

These schools have a minimum of one instructor or professor who devotes the majority of their time to lighting design and at least five courses dedicated to lighting related topics. Individual programs offer degrees at bachelors, masters or doctoral levels as well as certificates and minors in architectural lighting design. Degrees may be offered in the field of lighting design specifically or in other cognate disciplines including architecture, interior design or engineering.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

Otis College of Art and Design
Los Angeles, CA USA



Otis College of Art and Design is located in sunny, temperate Los Angeles, a magnet for artists, designers and innovators from around the world. OTIS' Lighting Design Certificate program was launched in 2010 with support of a Nuckolls Fund Grant. The program enrolls non-degree-seeking students through Continuing Education (CE) as well as Architecture/Landscape/Interiors B.F.A. students.

The QUT post-graduate lighting program commenced as an internal program in July 2004.The program has been developed to provide a full and comprehensive lighting education that is relevant to any person with an interest in lighting. Our Lighting programs are based on the university's slogan of a 'university for the real world' as the courses are tailored to meet the needs of the ever expanding lighting industry.

This multidisciplinary certificate is designed to provide students with the broad knowledge base and wide range of skills required as professionals in the lighting industry. Graduates of this program are working to design buildings which are environmentally responsible and ergonomically sound, and with enhanced vision for health and safety.

Brandi Institute for Light and Design

The Brandi Institute for Light and Design Certificate offers intensive study in lighting design for individuals who are beginning or willing to further push their career in architecture and/or lighting design. Each Master Class comprises lectures, workshops and mock-ups and will be taught by renowned architects and lighting designers.

BACHELORS PROGRAMS

HAWK University of Applied Sciences & Arts
Hildersheim, Germany



In Europe, Fachhochschule Hildesheim/Holzminden/Gottingen is the only institution that has developed and installed "Lighting-Design" as a full-time undergraduate degree course. It is an interdisciplinary course which integrates and uses the competence of other existing faculties, such as Interior Design, Architecture, Product-Design and Economics or Art.

Students following the lighting and electrical option in the Architectural Engineering undergraduate curriculum take a minimum of 5 lighting courses that help them acquire the knowledge for the lighting industry. The lecture work helps students learn the theory of light, vision, and computations. The design studio course work helps students learn design principles, apply theory, and solve lighting design problems.

Penn State offers a 5-year undergraduate Architectural Engineering degree with an option in Lighting and Electrical Systems that focuses on lighting design. Begun with a Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education grant in 1996, lighting design at TCU blossomed into an interdisciplinary lighting minor with a dedicated, well equipped educational lighting lab in two years. The Lighting Designer in Residence program has attracted a veritable who's who of lighting design including Paul Gregory, Chip Israel and Jonathan Spiers.

MASTERS PROGRAMS

KTH, Royal Institute of Technology
Handen, Sweden



The profile of the KTH Master Programmes in Architectural Lighting Design is based on a new approach to light and lighting which is a combination of visual, physical and biologically based knowledge and experience applied to design, technology and health. The aim of both the one year and the two years programmes is to provide the student with the fundamental knowledge in architectural lighting design, including both electrical and daylight solutions, to take into consideration efficiency, joy, health, sustainability, safety and acceptation by the people who live, work and relax in it.

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMS

Wismar International Graduation Services (WINGS)



WINGS, the distance learning centre at the University of Wismar, offers a part-time, English-language distance learning program called Architectural Lighting and Design Management. The four semester program leads to an internationally recognised Master of Arts (M.A.) qualification. Self-study is coupled with one-week workshops in Wismar, Berlin and Bangkok.
