Professional Designations

Professional lighting designers dedicate their careers exclusively to the art and science of lighting. To distinguish lighting design professionals from others, look for the following appelations:

IALD
This appelation is the essential indicator of a professional independent lighting designer. Professional membership in the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) is limited to experienced designers. IALD members abide by rules of ethics, called Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

L.C.
Lighting Certified (LC) is a professional credential indicating that the candidate has met specified basic standards and has a broad knowledge base in lighting. It is not limited to lighting designers, but does demonstrate to the public that the individual can apply fundamental lighting principles or techniques. The National Council for the Qualification of Lighting Professionals (NCQLP) administers a certification examination. The IALD is a member of NCQLP. Lighting professionals must have a minimum of three years experience before being eligible to take the exam. Those who are certified by NCQLP may use the L.C. designation.
