IALD ENLIGHTEN EUROPE PROGRAMME

DAY 1 - WEDNESDAY 12TH JANUARY 2011

10:00   Introduction
10:15   The Luminous Landscape; an Artist's Approach to Design

Leni Schwendinger, Principal Designer - Leni Schwendinger Light Projects Ltd

Leni will present a survey of projects that typify her unique approach to site design after dark – differentiating design and art.  The imagery and stories serve to underscore her main points: interpret site through in-depth research, consider the inhabitant/visitor experience throughout the design process, and explore new territory with each project.
11:00   The Stadium as Theatre for HDTV

Durham Marenghi, Founder - DMLD

Durham Marenghi will explain and illustrate his approach to the theatrical lighting of stadium events for live audience and HDTV and the deployment of temporary lighting systems for large scale public and civic occasions. Durham has illuminated the Royal Opening of St Pancras high speed railway station, was responsible for the lighting of Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Golden Jubilee, lit the opening of the new Shakthar FC stadium in Donetsk and designed the lighting for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games in Turin.

12:00   Coffee
12:15   Artistic Interactions in the Public Realm

Jason Bruges, Creative Director and Founder - Jason Bruges Studio

Jason will talk about recent commissions which are examples of this transformation that include Olympic bridges, sports arenas, stations, road infrastructure and substations in the UK, Europe, Russia, North America and the Middle East. He will also be talking about his inspiration for creating catalysts for conversation and change as well as his fascination for ephemeral architecture.

13:15   Lunch
14:15   Under the Influence
Philip Rose, Design Associate - Speirs + Major
Having worked at Speirs + Major for over 10 years Phil will explore the influences that have shaped his passion for light, whether they come from film, theatre, architecture, art, or music.
15:15   How do you communicate your idea in the public realm?
Leni Schwendinger, Principal Designer - Leni Schwendinger Light Projects Ltd

Jason Bruges, Creative Director and Founder - Jason Bruges Studio

The exciting projects that both Leni and Jason have developed and delivered have gone through a creative process.  The clients brief and then interpretation often inspires imaginative solutions. However, it's not always possible to have exactly what you want.  In this session Leni and Jason discuss how even the best laid plans of mice and men don't always work out as planned.  Dealing in the public realm brings its own series of challenges our speakers explain how they communicate their ideas by developing strategies with all the agencies involved and how their grand designs come to fruition.
16:15   Coffee
16:30   Real Ways to Save Energy

Mark Sutton Vane IALD PLDA, Principal - Sutton Vane Associates Lighting Design

Mark will show how, by careful design, it is possible to satisfy the user's needs, to create good lighting and save energy. In particular, he will put forward some controversial ideas for energy saving, and new ways of looking at lighting and energy use holistically. Examples will explore the challenges and opportunities presented both by new lighting technologies and others that are less expected.

    produces commercial and sustainable results

Maida Hot, Lighting Design Director - NDYLIGHT

In this talk we are guided through the design requirements of the retail environment and how the lighting designer interprets this. With the rapid development of LED technologies and the physical properties of the lighting equipment it now means design details can be smaller.  However, there are still considerations about depth of throw, colour rendering, heat, dimming and control as well as the sustainability issue.  What are the best tools available to lighting designers today? How can retail environments create individual personalities and push their brand envelope as it can't all be all about LEDs.
