ENLIGHTEN EUROPE 2009 PROGRAMME
Wednesday 4th February
W1:
Lighting Design is an Art. Not a mere meeting of prescribed lighting codes and standards.
10.15 - 11.15
Howard Brandston, Howard Brandston Partnership
That word ART is the critical descriptor of what lighting design is all about. ART!
I can't imagine anyone creating a code telling an artist, say Picasso, James Turrell, or Roy Lichtenstein, that he can no longer use a certain material because it is too energy intensive to produce. Or his artwork must be made out of sustainable? materials as if those criteria would make it Art or even good. Can you imagine telling Sir John Guilgood that he can only use 25 watts per meter square to light his show.
I wrote an equation for limiting the power for lighting in new buildings for the ASHRAE/IES Energy Code but I cant imagine writing an equation for morals, culture or art.
Before we can no longer bring artistic lighting to our clients we must confront our legislators and get realistic laws, laws that permit us to practice lighting as an art. Current evolving lighting recommendations are becoming beyond restrictive and are now bordering on artistic strangulation.
W2:
Geoff Archenhold, LED Government Advisor
11.15 - 12.15
W3:
Light Cibles - Reflections about the future of urban lighting
12.15 - 13.15
Louis Clair, Light Cibles
The future is knocking at our door. At home we dont care. It seams far away and indistinct. But, when we travel, we can observe it. Evening, in a foreign town, we take the time to look out of the hotel room window to discover the night sky lines, and we can see the future growing up in the towns, very fast. It is like a huge plant living under the ground of towns and having visible growths shooting out to the sky suddenly in a few places and throwing luminous seeds around. During day time, the news buildings are the most spectacular testimonies of this living future, but during the night, the invasion of the light is even more important in term of territory and of way of life. And there will be no way back.
W4:
The use of lighting in enbracing customers with the core brand values of product and experience

T1:
Exciting v Sustainable Office Lighting
10.15 - 11.15
David Bird, Lincolne Scott
The paper will address how to make sustainable office lighting exciting and still achieve the needs of global warming. It will demonstrate that, with a creative mind and the cooperation of the interior design team, it is possible to provide a well lit work space, one that engenders excitement for the staff, improves office efficiency and allows the staff to set their own visual environment. The paper will use a number of case studies to demonstrate the results.
T2:
Detailing Retailing
11.15 - 12.15
Lee Prince, Light and Design Associates
Retail has created modern day religion. With shopping becoming one of our main leisure activities. How do retailers keep us coming back and excite us enough to spend money? This talk explores the physiological and psychological factors used in lighting such environments.
Taking in to account architectural restrictions, technological advances and the 'global brand' case studies are used to illustrate the design process, including Banana Republic's new flag ship store in London.
T3:
Thomas Schielke, tsarc
12.15 - 13.15
In a time where companies and their products have become indistinguishable, corporate identity is no longer solely restricted to graphic design. Aspects such as architectural lighting have started to play an increasingly important role. A coherent lighting concept completes the company toolbox to expand the brand feeling. Design guidelines exceed light advertisement signs displayed on shops and create an atmosphere in which customers do not stand in front of the light but in light. International examples from retail, hotels and offices demonstrate different communication strategies.
T4
From Himalayas to Highrise.
14.15 - 15.15
Chad Groshart, IALD, Associate, Atelier Ten
Architectural lighting in the modern world is about improving the quality of the visual environment through well-designed systems. In developing countries, light is a quality of life issue. The experience of observing how people who live, work, and learn without electric light adapt and utilize the precious resource of a newly installed photovoltaic lighting system provides insights into sustainable lighting basics. We will explore the realities of truly sustainable and practically ""net zero carbon"" lighting and apply them to contemporary architectural lighting techniques. Participants will learn to correlate the essentials of well-placed task lighting, reliable equipment, high-efficacy sources, and power-conserving control strategies with environmentally responsible lighting design for modern buildings. Slides from Nepal will be integrated with slides of built lighting projects.
T5:
