LIGHT AND DARKNESS
Victor Palacio, Ideas en Luz, Tlalnepantla México
There is a strong relationship between light and darkness. Is it light that fills gaps in the dark environment, or is it shadow that creates those necessary dark spots in a luminous scene? How are human beings affected by light and darkness? This seminar will explore the value of darkness and light in mood, experience and lighting design.

CAN LIGHT MAKE US HEALTHY (AS WELL AS THIN AND RICH)?
Naomi Miller, FIALD, Naomi Miller Lighting Design, Troy, NY USA
Research is showing light and dark to be powerful agents in human health and well being. Lighting designers should be aware of the effects, both useful and detrimental, of lighting intensity, spectrum, duration and timing. After this seminar, attendees will understand how the eye works, how the spectrum affects functions of different parts of the body, and potential implications of health and light on architectural lighting.
3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
SACRED LIGHT
Colin Ball, Isometrix Lighting Design, London UK
Each of the world's religions demonstrate a unique approach to light which can be discerned in its core scripture, manifested in the use of light within the architecture. In our secular society where religion is no longer the only belief system, can our approach to lighting translate to what our society unconsciously holds sacred? This lecture explores a history of how a culture's beliefs and attitudes toward light shape its build environment.
3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.
THE SPIRIT OF LIGHT
Elias Cisneros, 333 luxes, Mérida, Yucatán México

WHAT MAKES THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY OF LIGHTING DESIGN?
Arq. Javier Ten, Artenluz, Guadalajara, Jalisco México
Good lighting design encompasses many areas of thought: the creative, the technical, the psychological, the physiological and the practical. When all of these areas are well resolved, a project will reach its full potential. But what happens when it doesn't? This seminar will include examples of both successful and unsuccessful lighting projects, and discuss the importance of understanding needs of the user as well as applying appropriate technology.
